The Archaeological Potential of Secondary Contexts

Project Methods

To achieve the aims and meet the objectives outlined above, the project will employ a range of analytical methods, including literature reviews, museum visits, artefact analysis, post-excavation fieldwork archive processing (topographical surveys, lithostratigraphic logs, clast fabic) and OSL (optically stimulated luminescence) dating programmes.

Dissemination of information to the aggregates industry, the wider academic community, and the public is a key component of the project, and will be achieved through open and closed meetings, the project web-site, project reports, conference papers and the development of new museum resources. Regular communication with other Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund project groups will obviously play a key role in both the dissemination and development of the project.

It is stressed however, that The Archaeological Potential of Secondary Contexts project is exploring fundamentally under-examined issues. Much of the work involves the integration of published data within new, innovative techniques and frameworks. Much of the methodology will therefore be finalised during (rather than prior to) the undertaking of the research project.
