The Archaeological Potential of Secondary
Contexts
1. A final project report, submitted to English Heritage. 2. Two papers. The first (Pleistocene geochronologies for fluvial sedimentary sequences: an archaeologist's perspective) has been submitted to the Journal of Quaternary Science. The second (Secondary Contexts: Interpretive frameworks for the derived artefacts of the British Lower Palaeolithic) has been submitted to the Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society. Both papers are currently being refereed. 3. Two one-day seminars, both hosted at the University of Southampton. The first (Aggregates Archaeology Frameworks (AAF) Workshop, co-organised with Dr Justin Dix) was hosted in April 2003 and the second (Southampton ALSF Palaeolithic Seminar, co-organised with Dr Francis Wenban-Smith) was hosted in November 2003. Presentations summarising this project's research were given at both seminars. 4. One conference paper (Rivers gravels, flakes and handaxes: Experiments in site formation, stone tool transportation and transformation) presented at the 1st EXAR Conference on Experimental Archaeology 2003 (Vienna, Austria). The paper summarised the spatial modelling methodologies developed as part of this research project. 5. Two conference posters, to be presented at the Palaeoanthropology Society 2004 annual meeting (to be held in Montreal, Canada on the 30th and 31st March, 2004. The posters summarise the new spatio-temporal models and interpretive frameworks developed as part of this research project. 6. One conference paper (Late stage 8 OSL dates: Implications for Lower Palaeolithic geoarchaeology at Broom) presented at the Palaeolithic-Mesolithic Day Meeting 2003 (British Museum, London). The paper summarised OSL dating research undertaken at the Lower Palaeolithic site at Broom on the Devon/Dorset border, analysed as part of this research project. The paper was subsequently published (Hosfield, R.T. & Chambers, J.C. 2002. The Lower Palaeolithic site of Broom: geoarchaeological implications of optical dating. Lithics: The Newsletter of the Lithic Studies Society 23: 33–42). 7. Two museum posters (and associated public information leaflets), produced for the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, Exeter. The posters (The Broom Lower Palaeolithic Site I and The Broom Lower Palaeolithic Site II) summarise the work undertaken at the Lower Palaeolithic site at Broom on the Devon/Dorset border, analysed and interpreted as part of this research project. 8. An artefact records and image database, documenting the C.E. Bean and Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery (Exeter) artefact collections from the Lower Palaeolithic site at Broom. Negotiations are currently underway with the Archaeology Data Service (ADS) with regards to the long-term archiving of the database. In the interim, access to the database can be arranged by application to either Dr Robert Hosfield or Jenni Chambers. 9. One outreach lecture (Early humans in the Axe Valley: the evidence from the Broom pits) presented to the Hawkchurch Historical Society in April 2003. The lecture summarised the work undertaken at the Lower Palaeolithic site at Broom on the Devon/Dorset border, analysed and interpreted as part of this research project. 10. Two University research seminars, presented to the Centre for the Archaeology of Human Origins (CAHO), University of Southampton (November 2003) and the Archaeological Society, University of Liverpool (November 2003).
