| The overall aim of module 2 is the collation and assessment of the extant Lower and Middle Palaeolithic archaeological record in the south-west region. This will be achieved as follows:
1) A review of regional and local museum records to identify the ‘invisible’ resource. This review will also collate records from the Historic Environment Records (HERs) for Cornwall, Somerset, Devon and Dorset, and Torbay and Plymouth, published literature and the 'grey literature' concerned with the fluvial landscape-based Palaeolithic archaeology of the south-west region.
2) Updating of the GIS model/relational database (created in Module 1) with Palaeolithic findspot data.
3) An artefact sampling programme, designed and implemented on the basis of the literature review and the identification of Palaeolithic findspots and assemblages in the south-west region. The sampling programme will be directed at artefacts held in local, regional and national museums, as indicated by the literature review, and will generate morphological, typo-technological and physical condition data (to be added to the GIS model/relational database.
4) Organisation and hosting of a Regional Palaeolithic Networks meeting at the School of Geography, Archaeology & Earth Resources, University of Exeter in eary Summer 2005. The meeting will outline the goals of the project to the participants, and construct effective networks (in collaboration with the National Ice Age Network project) for the future exchange of knowledge regarding Palaeolithic artefact finds.
5) The specific data requirements of the south-west’s HER staff (with regard to current content and omissions in the region’s HER Palaeolithic records) will be established through consultation meetings.
6) The Broom Lower Palaeolithic assemblage will be returned to the Dorset County Museum, Dorchester.
The intended module 2 outcomes are as follows:
1) Collation of the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic archaeological record for the south-west region.
2) Enhancement of the GIS model/relational database.
3) Development of regional Palaeolithic research and outreach networks.
