Resources

This page includes a range of digital resource materials relating to British Palaeolithic archaeology and Ice Age (Pleistocene) geology, with specific reference to the Palaeolithic archaeology and Pleistocene rivers of the south-west. These resources include Palaeolithic archaeology teaching materials (resource cards), a project poster, and a flyer and booklet summarising the results of the Palaeolithic Rivers of South-West Britain project.

Palaeolithic Archaeology Teaching Materials

These resource cards have been designed to provide introductory materials that can support teaching and learning with respect to the British Palaeolithic. The teaching cards cover 6 topics: Palaeolithic stone tools; Palaeolithic hominins; Palaeolithic chronology; Pleistocene climate, flora, and fauna; Pleistocene landscapes; and Palaeolithic lifestyles and behaviour.

Each topic has a Basic and Advanced card, with each card providing information, key terminology, quiz questions, images and/or tables, and further website resources. The resource cards have not been aimed at specific learning groups: rather they provide a wide range of information, enabling teachers and learners to select as much or as little of the information as you wish (for further details on using the resource cards, see the Resource Box Introduction or contact the author Dr Rob Hosfield for further guidance.

You might also like to consider purchasing a set of replica (resin) stone tools to support the stone tool resource cards. These are manufactured and sold by GeoEd Ltd - we have used their sets of 13 artefacts (catalogue code PA 14.0: for a contents list click here) for the project outreach events (to see the full list of their replica Palaeolithic artefacts and hominin and other animal fossils, click on the Pleistocene link on the Stratigraphic Column on the right-hand of the GeoEd webpage).

Project Poster

This A0 size colour poster (downloadable here) provides a summary of Palaeolithic archaeology in the south-west, including some of the key sites.

Project Flyer and Booklet

The results of the Palaeolithic Rivers of South-West Britain project are briefly summarised on a double-sided A4 flyer (downloadable here), and discussed in more detail in an 8 page A5 booklet, downloadable here (a on-line glossary of terms supporting the booklet can also be found here as part of this website).

Please note that the booklet pdf file has been formatted for double sided printing (i.e. page 2 backing page 1, page 4 backing page 3 etc) and folding into an A5 size booklet. The order of the pages will not make sense if you use single sided printing!

If you have any queries about any of the material listed above, please contact the author Dr Rob Hosfield for further guidance.
