THE SYLLABLE: SONORITY

(a) Plot the following words onto the sonority scale and discuss the results:

ear, car, earn, fold, confuse, charming, action, assumption, carelessness, violin, evolution, entertainment, revolutionary, circumstantiality.

(b) Discuss the difficulties in the sonority analysis of the following words:

power, lower, seeing, dual /(i) ˈdju:.əl; (ii) djʊəl/, serious /(i) ˈsɪə.ri.əs; (ii) ˈsɪə.rjəs/, eggs, speak, sticks.

SYLLABLE STRUCTURE

(a) Make tree diagrams for the following syllables.

big, done, peak, shame, car, do, ease, own, air, oh, tree, new, old, trunk, field, trained, cleaned.

(b) Discuss the problems that the tree diagrams of the following words pose:

prompt /prɒmpt/, linked /lɪŋkt/, strain, scream.

(c) Try to explain the reason for the possible elision in prompt /prɒmt/ and linked /lɪŋt/.

SYLLABIFICATION

Divide the following words into syllables according to all three approaches outlined in the tutorial:

rabbit, better, greater, pager, stranger, finger, mattress, insist, fury, prosper, prosperity (/prɒsperəti/, stressed vowel underlined), hello /(i) hələʊ; (ii) heləʊ/, phonology.
